M.I.A. (birth name Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam) is an English electronica and alternative dance songwriter, record producer and singer. She was born on 18 July 1975, in Hounslow, London, England. Her music style is often considered as a mix of dancehall, electro, jungle, and world music. Her music career began with a contract with Showbiz Records. In 2005, she released her debut album, Arular, which reached number 190 on the Billboard 200. She achieved mainstream success with her second album, Kala, which was praised by critics. The album's single, "Paper Planes", was nominated for Record of the Year at the 51st Grammy Awards. Later, this song was nominated for the Oscar as Best Original Song.
