Biography

Al Green (birth name Albert Greene) is an American R&B, gospel and soul singer. He was born on April 13, 1946, in Forrest City, Arkansas/Grand Rapids, Michigan. In high school he formed a group called Al Greene & the Creations. Curtis Rogers and Palmer James, two members of the Creations, formed an independent label called Hot Line Music Journal. In 1967, under the new name Al Greene & the Soul Mates, the band recorded "Back Up Train" and released it on Hot Line Music. This song was an R&B chart hit. He achieved mainstream success in 1972 with his most successful album, I'm Still in Love With You, which produced several hit singles such as "Love and Happiness", "Simply Beautiful", "Oh, Pretty Woman", "I'm Still in Love with You" and "Look What You Done for Me". The album's lead singles, "Love and Happiness", was ranked number 98 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
