Betty Haskins, better known as Bettye LaVette was born on January 29, 1946 in Muskegon, Michigan, the United States. She is an American soul singer-songwriter who began her recording career at the age of 16. For many years, she was in a shadow of other popular artists but eventually she received deserved success. The album “I’ve Got Me Own Hell to Raise” composed of the covers of the songs written by other female artists, broke her though to the mainstream success. The album was praised by the critics. She solidified her success releasing the next album “The Scene of the Crime” in 2007. The album earned her Grammy Award nomination in the category “Best Contemporary Blues Album”.
