Biography

English rock band Dire Straits was formed in 1977 in Newcastle, England, UK. The band was founded by Mark Knopfler (vocals and lead guitar), David Knopfler (rhythm guitar and vocals), John Illsley (bass guitar and vocals), and Pick Withers (drums and percussion), and Ed Bicknell (manager). Dire Straits reached popularity very quickly and remained one of the most popular rock bands during their era. They split in 1995. The peak of the band’s career happened in 1985 with a release of their hit album Brothers in Arms. The album was the best-selling record in the UK and was very big internationally surpassing Michael Jackson’s Thriller. The album yielded such hit singles like “Money for Nothing”, “Walk of Life”, “Brothers in Arms” and “Your Latest Trick”. There are many famous people among Dire Straits fans including Princess Diana, Quentin Tarantino and Jon Bon Jovi.
