Polish-American composer, pianist and teacher Leopold Godowsky was born on February 13, 1870 near Wilno (Russian Impire, now Lithuania) and died on November 21, 1938 in the United States. At the age of fourteen he entered Königliche Hochschule für Musik in Berlin and was studying there for three months under the name Ernst Rudorff. Otherwise he was self-taught. And being self-taught he is called Pianist of Pianists. Many prominent musicians of that time praised his play technique. He bagan teaching at the New York College of Music in 1890 where he became an American citizen. Such people as Jan Smeterlin, Issay Dobrowen and Heinrich Neuhaus were among Godowsky’s students.
