Belgian singer-songwriter, actor and film director Jacques Brel, birth name Jacques Romain Georges Brel was born on 8 April 1929, in Schaarbeek, Belgium and died on October 9, 1978 in Bobigny, France. He reached the popularity in the 1960s-1970s as a chanson singer-songwriter and continued his popularity as actor and film director. He moved from Belgium to Paris where he rose to the international fame. In total he sold about 25 million copies of his albums including 12 million in Belgium and France. He sang almost exclusively in French, sometimes in Dutch. Many of his songs were translated and performed in different languages. Artists that covered his songs in English include Frank Sinatra, David Bowie, Nina Simone, Alex Harvey and others.
