American singer and drummer Karen Carpenter, birth name Karen Anne Carpenter was born on March 2, 1950 in New Haven, Connecticut and died on February 4, 1983 in Los Angeles, California. She rose to fame as the lead singer of the Carpenters, the band, which composed of Karen, her brother Richard, and his college friend Wes Jacobs. They rose to fame in 1970 releasing the album Close To You. The album spawned two hit singles (They Long to Be) Close to You" and "We've Only Just Begun” which reached number 1 and 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 respectively. Karen’s drumming skills were praised by other drummers like Hal Blaine, Cubby O'Brien, Buddy Rich and by Modern Drummer magazine. Karen’s brother took a year off in 1979 and Karen decided to make a solo album. The record was released only after Karen’s death in 1996.
