The Magnetic Fields are an American indie pop and rock music band that was formed in 1989 by Stephin Merritt and currently consists of Stephin Merritt (ukulele, keyboard, lead vocals), Claudia Gonson (percussion, piano, vocals), Sam Davol (cello and flute) and John Woo (banjo and guitar). In the late 1980s, Merritt signed to Merge Records. In 1992, they released their debut album, Distant Plastic Trees. Their following album, The Wayward Bus, was released in 1992. The band achieved mainstream success only in 2008 with their best selling and high-charting album, Distortion, which peaked at number 77 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. Distortion also produced several singles such as "California Girls", "Old Fools", "Xavier Says", "I'll Dream Alone" and "The Nun's Litany".
