Biography

Great Austrian composer and conductor Gustav Mahler was born on July 7, 1860 in Kaliste (now Czech Republic) and died on May 18, 1911 in Vienna, Austria. His family belonged to the German-speaking minority in Bohemia and they were Jewish. Because of his background it was very difficult for him to establish himself as a musician. In order to succeed, he turned himself in Catholicism. He attended Vienna Conservatory and graduated from in 1878, later he enrolled at Vienna University. He made a great career as a conductor, reaching the highest title for a musician in the Austro-Hungarian Empire – the director if the Viennese Opera. His own music reached the deserved popularity only in decades after his death. During the Nazi era there was a ban on his music. So his music was discovered only after 1945.
