Michael Franti is an American hip hop, funk, reggae, jazz and folk musician. He was born on April 21, 1966, in Oakland, California. He is also a founder and lead vocalist of Michael Franti & Spearhead band. He rose to fame in the mid-1980 as a member of the industrial punk band The Beatnigs. In the early 1990s, he joined The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy band. During this time, he also collaborated with jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter, and electronic musicians Mark Pistel. In 1994, he founded Spearhead. In addition, at the same time, he released his debut album, Home, which contained his first hit single, "Positive". In 1997, he released his following album, Chocolate Supa Highway, which included guest appearances by Stephen Marley and Joan Osborne. In 2001, he released his breakthrough album, Stay Human, which spawned the singles, "Radio Segment", "We Don't Mind", "Radio Segment", "Rock the Nation", "Sometimes" and "Radio Segment".
