English-born American singer-songwriter Nell Marie McKay, better known as Nellie McKay was born on April 13 in London, England. Her father is a Scottish writer/director and mother is an American actress. When her parents divorced she moved to New York City with her mother. She is an open feminist and proud member of PETA. As for music, her sound varies from jazz to rap, from rock to disco, funk and anti-folk. McKay has released four studio albums including one cover album. Her debut work Get Away From Me was released in 2004. The album was produced by Geoff Emerick who had been The Beatles sound engineer. The record received critical acclaim and the album entered several “Best of 2004” lists. McKay toured on the northern United States and opened for the first part of the Au Naturale tour.
