Biography

Roots is a hip-hop band from Philadelphia, U.S. The band was formed in 1987 by Tariq Trotter (Black Thought) and Ahmir Khalib Thompson (Questlove). Their career started around Philadelphia, when they organized shows together with Leonard Hubbard (Hub) and Malik B. In 1991, the band was named "The Square Roots". During some time, the band was named as "The Fifth Dynasty", "The Foundation" and "The Legendary Roots Crew". The current band’s line-up consists of MC, drummer, electronic keyboardist, percussionist, electric guitarist, sousaphonist and bassist. Roots released about eleven studio albums (Phrenology, The Tipping Point, Game Theory, etc.) and two live albums (The Roots Come Alive and Jay-Z: Unplugged). Their last album (How I Got Over) was recorded in June 2010.
