Biography

English alternative rock band The Smiths was from Manchester, was formed in 1982. The group comprised Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce. Although they had limited commercial success outside the UK while they were still together, and never released a single that charted higher than number 10 in their home country, the band won a growing following, and remain cult and commercial favourites. The band broke up in 1987 amid disagreements between Morrissey and Marr and have turned down several offers to reform since then. The Smiths's second album, Meat Is Murder (1984), became the band's sole number one album in the UK charts during the band's lifetime, and you may download it in mp3 from our site. It yielded the lead single "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore". In 2003, the album was ranked number 295 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Meat is Murder is also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die (2006).
