Umberto Eco is the most well-known contemporary Italian novelist, born on January 5, 1932 in Alessandria, Piedmont, Kingdom of Italy. His first novel The name of the Rose was published in 1980. During his career, he wrote five novels and the sixth novel “The Cemetery of Prague” is planned to be released in October 2010. Eco calls himself “young novelist”. His other novels are Foucault's Pendulum, The Island of the Day Before, Baudolino, and The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana. Besides writing fiction Eco is known for many his non-fiction works on semiotics, linguistics, morality and aesthetics like Art and Beauty in the Middle Ages, A Theory of Semiotics, The Role of the Reader: Explorations in the Semiotics of Texts, The Limits of Interpretation and many others.
